What's the advantage of having metallic paint on a car rather than a solid colour?

and why is it always an added extra? What's the advantage of having metallic paint on a car rather than a solid colour?
The finish of metallic paint is far better then solid paint work,my only reservation is if at any time you have an accident, the matching up is not as per fact as the original, also the cost comes into play.

I had that problem with a metallic silver paint on the car I had,it never been the same. What's the advantage of having metallic paint on a car rather than a solid colour?
There is no advantage to having metallic paint. It is just a personal preference. Some people like solid colors and others prefer metallics. Metallics cost more because they are more difficult to spray evenly and the materials to make a metallic color are more expensive than a solid.
some claim they 'shine' and look better than the solid colors, however it is just personal preference. they are also more expensive because of what makes them metallic.
Metallic paint looks better and is more expensive because it is a two stage process. The base colour is applied and then covered with a clear coat to make it shine.
What Kenny says bears out what I have suspected for a long time. The next question is why manufacturers use them.
